The joys of setting up a new computer system....probably wouldn't be so bad but for the fact that I managed somehow to get 4 OSs behind. Talk about learning the hard way...from now on, I plan on upgrading frequently.
Don't get me wrong,,,I love my new Mac! 24" screen...gorgeous! Wireless keyboard...so small! And the wireless mouse...fabulous!!!! And the new OS features are great, too...^-^
So I put off transferring data, somehow knowing it was going to be a major task. Little did I know! I called Apple Support on Friday after my last morning lesson at 9:30. The support tech was very polite and helpful..he asked for the serial number of the new system, we talked about what I wanted to do, and he suggested I put all my music on a couple of DVDs...that was the easiest way to move the data from the old to the new. I thanked him profusely...kicking myself for waiting an entire week to call....see, it was going to be easy!
Not having any DVDs, I hurriedly jumped in the car, drove 20 minutes to the nearest store, bought a bunch of DVDs, had some lunch at my favorite pasta restaurant....got home around 1 in a very relaxed mood and sat down, put a DVD in the old system, listened as the machine clicked away, and....then the DVD popped out!!! Huh? Ok, try again....the machine clicked away and....the DVD popped out again! Not believing what was happening, of course, I tried again...only to have the same result.
So it wasn't going to be so easy....why was I not surprised. So I got on the phone to Apple again....this time the support tech (different from the first) asked me for the serial number of the old system when I told him my problem. He was as disappointed as I was when he told me the system didn't support DVDs....now what do I do? I mean, hello, if nothing else, I HAD to transfer my music...9GBs of so much of my life!
And the tech was very sympathetic! He very patiently guided me in setting up a file sharing connection between the two systems using wifi....after warning me it would probably take a while for the transfer to take place. At that point, I really didn't care...even when he told me it would be best not to access the internet at the same time as it would slow down the process even further.
Little did I know....it took 17 hours!!!! I started the transfer around 2.30pm, went out for an English lesson with my 3-year-olds, came back, had dinner, watched some TV, went to bed, and when I got up at 6;30 the next morning, it was still going on! Finally, at 7:20, I got the all clear sign....WOOHOO! And when I checked iTunes, all of the file was there!! My lessons ended at 10am, and I immediately turned on the sound....what a relief...^-^
And I even survived not being able to check my email and Kiva for more than half a day! LOL
One more thing I love about the new system...the speakers are bigger, so the sound is that much louder...and I do love my music loud...must be in my DNA...Dad was the same. (a story for another day)
Yesterday was picture day....more than 6GBs...that took over 12 hours. The data files took an hour...all that is left is my email address book which I can't figure out how to handle. Back to Apple Support...but it can wait until tomorrow....!
